SJC OWL Sessions

To help you come to grips with the challenging world of digital media, the School of Journalism & Communication offers free, optional sessions in media production skills. These sessions include shooting and editing video and still images, recording and editing sound, and producing print media. These classes are known as OWL Sessions, and are delivered by the School's MaPS Team (Media and Production Support).

The sessions are held during O-Week, and then on various days every week over the teaching semester.

You'll find the schedule here: http://sjcstudents.eventbrite.com . It currently lists courses running during O-Week. This link stays the same throughout the year and will always list upcoming sessions.

Young Australian Journalist of the Year Awards

Are you aged 26 or under and have created a great piece of journalism in the past year?

It could be your ticket to the top newsrooms of London, Washington and New York – literally.

Entries are now open for the inaugural Young Australian Journalist of the Year Awards. Proudly presented by the Walkley Foundation and the Media Entertainment & Arts Alliance, the Young Journo award is the Walkley for, well, young journos.

Best of all, the prize isn’t just a good-looking paperweight. The winning young Australian journalist of the year will be jetting off on a three week trip to the best newsrooms in London, New York and Washington. Oh, and with $5000 cash.

Here’s how it works. There are five categories: print, television, radio, online and photography. The judging panel will draw up a shortlist of three finalists in each category before selecting one category winner to vie for the main prize. Members of the Walkley Advisory Board will judge the category winners to select the Young Australian Journalist of the Year. Winners will be announced at a special event in Sydney in June.

Who’s eligible? All Australian journalists aged 26 and under (on March 14 2009), whether you’re employed full-time or freelance. Final year university students are also eligible. But your work must have been published or broadcast through Australian media outlets between 15 March 2008 and 14 March 2009.

Visit the website http://www.youngjournalistawards.org.au/ for more information and to enter.

The Young Australian Journalist of the Year Awards – your passport to the world of journalism. Send us your best work today!

NOW OPEN

Entries close 5pm, Friday 20 March, 2009

Red Cross National Writing Competition

FYI Australian Red Cross has just contacted us with the following invitation to SJC’s undergraduate students to submit entries in the following national competition this Semester, and have asked if we could alert everyone.

In Semester One of 2009 (in conjunction with the International Committee of the Red Cross) Australian Red Cross is running a National Writing Competition for Undergraduate Students of Journalism. They are seeking entries from our journalism students on the theme of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) - or the Geneva Conventions, the rules of war that should afford protection to the wounded, prisoners and civilians during international or internal wars/armed conflicts.

Entries should take the form of 1000-word long feature articles. Topics can include (but are not restricted to) the following:
· military targeting – distinguishing between military objectives and civilian sites;
· rape and sexual violence in war;
· genocide;
· war crimes and their prosecution at international criminal tribunals;
· detention;
· terrorism and suicide bombers;
· weapons – such as cluster munitions;
· child soldiers.

There are significant cash prizes, and the offer of publication for first, second and third place getters. This competition closes at the end of May. A panel of professional journalists will judge the competition in June.

Australian Red Cross hopes that UQ journalism undergraduate students will be keen to learn all about the competition.

Agribusiness Association of Australia media opportunity

Below is a copy of an email from the contact person from the AAA. For more information see the AAA's corporate profile and function schedule.

Agribusiness Association of Australia (AAA):

Our association facilitates the networking of professionals in Agribusiness across all sectors of the industry. As the director for Queensland one of my responsibilities is to foster media awareness. With this in mind the AAA would like to invite a journalism student interested in Agriculture to attend our functions. The student will be asked to write a synopsis of the event, which once approved by the board will be disseminated on our website and by other media networks.

By doing so we hope to create a win win scenario for the student and AAA. The student getting practical experience and media exposure, and AAA obtaining quality journalism skills at our functions.

I am more than happy to discuss this further with any academics who which to suggest students for the role.

I have enclosed a profile of the organization and a list of events that will occur next year.

I look forward to working with UQ and it's students.

Regards
