MEAA Freelance Convention

Very special offer - 10% off all Media Alliance student member registrations!

Freelance 2009 – On the road, off the page
This year, international keynote speaker Mark Schapiro joins us from Berkeley, USA to discuss the future of work for freelance journalists. With decades of experience as an award-winning investigative journalist and author, Mark is now editorial director for the Center for Investigative Reporting.
Colin Freeman (Chief Correspondent, Daily Telegraph UK) joins us by satellite, with some serious tales to tell. Colin took himself off to Iraq as a freelance reporter shortly after Baghdad fell to US troops and started filing (getting shot in the backside along the way). He was also released early last month from 40 days of captivity by Somali pirates!

Convention sessions include:
• I am the brand: marketing for established freelancers
• Guerrilla freelancing: from beginners up, a freelance survival guide
• Guns for hire – freelancers are journalism’s future
• Character and narrative: drawing out people’s stories
• Life’s a pitch: tips from commissioning editors to get you work

Speakers include: Mark Schapiro, Margret Simons, Stephen Mayne, Alison Aprhys, John Martinkus, John Andersen, Sophie McNeill (2008 Young Australian Journalist of the Year), Tim Richards, Craig Sherborne, Matthew Ricketson, Gideon Haigh and many more to be announced.
