Red Cross National Writing Competition

FYI Australian Red Cross has just contacted us with the following invitation to SJC’s undergraduate students to submit entries in the following national competition this Semester, and have asked if we could alert everyone.

In Semester One of 2009 (in conjunction with the International Committee of the Red Cross) Australian Red Cross is running a National Writing Competition for Undergraduate Students of Journalism. They are seeking entries from our journalism students on the theme of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) - or the Geneva Conventions, the rules of war that should afford protection to the wounded, prisoners and civilians during international or internal wars/armed conflicts.

Entries should take the form of 1000-word long feature articles. Topics can include (but are not restricted to) the following:
· military targeting – distinguishing between military objectives and civilian sites;
· rape and sexual violence in war;
· genocide;
· war crimes and their prosecution at international criminal tribunals;
· detention;
· terrorism and suicide bombers;
· weapons – such as cluster munitions;
· child soldiers.

There are significant cash prizes, and the offer of publication for first, second and third place getters. This competition closes at the end of May. A panel of professional journalists will judge the competition in June.

Australian Red Cross hopes that UQ journalism undergraduate students will be keen to learn all about the competition.
